PHOENIX - Maricopa County voters approved Proposition 409, passing a bond for infrastructure improvements and critical upgrades to Valleywise Health that includes the construction of a new, larger behavioral health hospital that will replace a 50-year-old facility.
“Valleywise is thrilled to double the number of beds at this facility so we can serve people with court-ordered mental health evaluations,” said Timothy Louis, Chair of the “Yes on 409” campaign. “With a 169% growth of mental health cases in the past decade, it’s time to build a modern facility to treat more people in need.”
Voters joined a broad coalition of community, faith and business leaders, law enforcement, firefighters, nurses and elected officials to ensure Valleywise Health, the county’s safety net health care system, can continue meeting the health needs of residents in one of America’s fastest-growing regions. Valleywise also plans to expand emergency room and trauma capacity, build an outpatient specialty clinic, upgrade two community health centers, and increase capacity to teach the next generation of doctors and mental health professionals.
“We know Maricopa County voters understand the urgent need to invest in our safety-net hospital in order to meet these growing demands,” said Dr. Michael White, Valleywise Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. “We are excited to begin the next phase of providing Maricopa County residents with world-class facilities at their public county hospital.”
“I would like to thank the local supporters who helped us raise awareness of these important needs in our community. They are the reason we were able to reach voters about this worthy effort,” Louis added.
The victory will kick start a public planning process by the Board of Directors of the Special Health Care District to help make critical upgrades to the hospital system.
